This class is an introduction to direct carving techniques for wood sculpture. We will begin with whole logs and by utilizing a variety of carving tools from chain saw to wood lathe to chisel we will explore the most direct path from idea to form. Surface treatments and texture will also be explored as a means of enhancing the form. Demonstrations and conversations will focus on safety, efficiency, and the nature of wood as a material for sculpture. We will start with an introductory project to develop familiarity with tools and then move on to more self directed projects that represent a more personal aesthetic. Our goal will be for students to leave the class with the knowledge and skills necessary to continue the work after they have left.
Carving – ASF 330 01/CRN 10644 – $499 course fee, supply fee $50, payable at the first class. No refunds after July 17.
