This class is an introduction to direct carving techniques for wood sculpture. Begin with whole logs and by utilizing a variety of carving tools, from chain saw to wood lathe to chisel, explore the most direct path from idea to form. Surface treatments and texture will also be explored as a means of enhancing the form. Demonstrations will focus on safety, efficiency and the nature of wood as a material for sculpture. Start with an introductory project to develop familiarity with tools and then move on to more self-directed projects that represent a more personal aesthetic. Students will leave with the knowledge and skills to continue working.
