The Summer Day -Mary Oliver
Who made the world?
Who made the swan, and the black bear?
Who made the grasshopper?
This grasshopper, I mean-
the one who has flung herself out of the grass,
the one who is eating sugar out of my hand,
who is moving her jaws back and forth instead of up and down-
who is gazing around with her enormous and complicated eyes.
Now she lifts her pale forearms and thoroughly washes her face.
Now she snaps her wings open, and floats away.
I don’t know exactly what a prayer is.
I do know how to pay attention, how to fall down
into the grass, how to kneel down in the grass,
how to be idle and blessed, how to stroll through the fields,
which is what I have been doing all day.
Tell me, what else should I have done?
Doesn’t everything die at last, and too soon?
Tell me, what is it you plan to do
with your one wild and precious life?
During this moment of this one precious life, let’s pay attention together. Santa Fe Studio Tour #10, (@110h!) invites you to honor the memory of fellow Santa Fe Studio Tour artist and neighbor, Jennifer Thompson; selected pieces Jennifer’s work will be available for purchase here and along thetour, proceeds going to her memorial fund.
The shared human experience we name breast cancer as an art form and a familiar muse @110h! She literally greets us with opens arms with each passage through the front door. She wines and dines us as a story table. She occupies ‘honored guest’ status, sculpted under glass as bell jar biography and top-shelf-positioned on our story wall. And copper luminaries glow ambient memory light into gathering space, inside and out. That’s just a beginning. Is she, cancer, an honored guest of yours or someone you walk alongside?
On this one summer day, approach this door, where opportunity knocks. See how close-to-the-bone moments of crisis can sculpt, chisel, and torch danger and opportunity into beauty and re-purpose challenge into artful living. And then…oh the places we can go!
