“Novel Iowa City” is an experimental community writing project created and presented via Twitter during the July 15-17, 2011 Iowa City Book Festival.
The project will feature 10 to 20 invited authors | editors, and, we hope, numerous community contributors.
A Twitter Feed displayed on screens around town [e.g. Prairie Lights, Old Capitol Mall, ICPL, Main Library, UIMA, etc.] will track the work as it is being written. It will also be promoted and featured online on social media sites.
Public information efforts in the run-up to the launch of the project will spotlight this New Media experiment in writing. In addition to the invited writers, community members are very much encouraged to contribute. All writers will include the hash tag #icbfn in their tweets.
Meetings with authors on the project’s narrative structure, as well character, plot, location elements and scripted events are helping shape the project.
Once the Book Festival ends on Sunday, July 17, editors will help create an archived version of the project.
Virtual Writing University Experimental Wing Director Jon Winet is producing the project. University of Iowa graduate and undergraduate researchers will help with coordination and public information. The Virtual Writing University is Co-Producer and the Iowa City UNESCO City of Literature organization is the Executive Producer.
