Theo Helmstadter’s work in stoneware, known for its elegance, earthiness, and strength, continues to evolve. He presents new work this November, with an opening reception weekend just before the Thanksgiving holiday. Local clays and glaze materials, spontaneous wheel-throwing technique, and an intense, high temperature kiln firing all contribute to the look and feel of this work, much of which is large-scale: jars and platters, tall vases, wall-mounted platters. A sense of time – a connection to the past and to stoneware’s traditional roots – is evident in the work, much of which is functional. Exploring pottery’s archetypal forms allows Helmstadter to pursue a quiet beauty, an elemental connection between art and every-day life. His artesanal approach to making, and his use of local clays and glaze materials, keeps his newest work closely rooted to its source – the earth –
and to the land and landscapes of Northern New Mexico.
