Make yourself at home in Christy Hengst’s well-equipped ceramics studio, and create finished pieces to bring home. This eight-day workshop will focus on the creation of all manner of tiles, and can extend to 3-dimensional slab-built pieces if so desired. Drawing, painting, pouring, sgraffito, carving and impressing will all be presented. Special instruction will be given for those who want it in silk-screening onto clay, a technique that Christy has been developing for 10 years and allows photographs, handwriting and other images or text to be transferred and high-fired onto the clay surface.
Classes are in evenings and on weekends to accommodate a working schedule; there will be at least one slide show brainstorming ideas with related ceramic work, and participants are encouraged to bring examples of their past endeavors. The last day of class will be a firing party with guest demonstrators, and finished pieces can be picked up a few days later.
Christy Hengst has taught in Germany, Ecuador and the US, and is the perpetrator of the traveling public art project “birds in the park”. Her studio is on Industrial Road in Santa Fe, NM. www.christyhengst.com
