Confluence: Patterns in Poetry, Mathematics and Nature / June 23, 2012
Nature often provides templates for patterns and symmetry. Poets, artists, mathematicians and scientists, in turn, illuminate these patterns and symmetric forms. In this series of collaborative and lively lectures and workshops we will discuss patterns and symmetries found in Nature, how they have been adopted and adapted by poets and artists, and familiarize ourselves with examples given from traditional poetic forms, such as the sestina and sonnet, and the modern form of fractal poetry. Experienced poets will (hopefully!) develop a greater understanding and appreciation for forms they write in. Less experienced poets will have opportunities to do exercises that will result in the drafting of Fibonacci, sestinas and fractal poems, amongst others. Future workshops in the series will consider poetry informed by science. No knowledge of mathematics or science is needed, just curiosity!

Saturday June 23rd, 10-11:30 AM: Introduction, poems about special numbers, and Fibonacci poems;
Tuesday July 17th 7 – 8:30 PM: Sestinas and introduction to fractal poetry;
What to bring: whatever writing implements you use – paper, pencil, laptops…
Biography: Michael G. Smith, Ph.D., is an early-retired Los Alamos National Laboratory chemist, and former adjunct mathematics faculty at Santa Fe Community College. His poetry has been published or is forthcoming in Borderlands: Texas Poetry Review, Cider Press Review, the Kerf, Matter, New Mexico Poetry Review, Nimrod, the Santa Fe Literary Review, Sulphur River Literary Review, Superstition Review, and other journals. An outdoor enthusiast, he lives in Santa Fe, NM.
