Dye painting and stencilling on silk with Sandra Holzman / August 9th, 2012
Learn a quick and easy way to paint beautiful colors on silk and other fabrics. No steaming or toxic materials. We will learn several techniques that produce beautiful colorfast fabrics. We will introduce shibori dye techniques and the use of thickened dyes to paint and do stencilling. Materials fee covers a Dyeworks Toolkit for each student to take home with enough in it to make several more projects, as well as 3 pieces of fabric and a silk scarf!
Making patterns on fabric, furniture or the walls is fun and easy with stencils. You can learn to make your own stencils and combine them with store bought ones to create wonderful repeat patterns on many surfaces. We will be working on fabric with Procion Fiber Reactive dyes.
Starting the day with basic fabric painting techniques, we will prepare several pieces of fabric by painting with dyes. Then we will examine design ideas for making our stencils, and design and cut stencils for use on our fabrics. The stencil techniques for other surfaces (like furniture and the walls) will be discussed. We will continue the class with the painting of unique patterns on our painted fabrics with our stencils. Careful attention will be devoted to each student’s mastery of the stencil technique. Everyone will make several pieces of fabric and a scarf.
