Charcoal & Wood Firing: Come join local wood fired potter Logan Wannamaker in this intensive Charcoal & Wood Firing workshop. We will be discussing and formulating, slips, glazes and clays conducive to the wood firing and charcoal firing process. Each participant will be able to bring 3 cubic feet to load in both kilns. We will be discussing firing methods to induce flashing, ash build up as well as firing technique.

LOGAN WANNAMAKER

lives and works in Taos, New Mexico. His gallery and studio are located a few minutes North of Taos and about a hour and a half drive North of Santa Fe. Logan is the director of Taos Clay, a community studio offering classes, workshops and residencies. His gallery showcases wood-fired, charcoal, salt, soda and saggar fired ceramics. His work is both functional and decorative and embodies the colors of the Southwest using regional minerals, local soft woods, and atmospheric firing techniques. He produces functional dishes ranging from mugs, cups, bowls plates and vases to wall hangings, sculpture, ikebana, and contemporary interior decoration. 13th Annual Sax Stonecarving Workshop / June 22-28, 2013

This summer we will offer TWO 7-DAY intensive stonecarving workshops. Our workshops are open to all levels of experience – from beginner to professional. We welcome everyone – men, women, young, old. Participants of all levels enjoy one-on-one instruction in a supportive atmosphere and an unequalled opportunity to study with the best instructors in the field.

Class tuition in the summer sessions includes one cubic foot of limestone. (Other stones are also available at very reasonable prices, and a comparably priced stone can be substituted for the limestone.)  Lunch each day is included with summer sessions only.

The workshops are held at Southwest Stoneworks in Rinconada, New Mexico, in the heart of the Land of Enchantment. The stoneyard sits along a rugged volcanic upheaval with the Rio Grande flowing through its rift valley. Nestled at the foot of the Sangre de Cristo Mountains in a fertile fruit growing valley, this area has long been home to colonies of artists and craftsmen. Rinconada is just 20 minutes from Taos and 50 minutes from Santa Fe, two of the country’s most vibrant art centers. Within a 7-mile radius are several small B&B’s, a local grocery, two wineries, a brewery, and a restaurant. Motels and restaurants are numerous in nearby Taos.

Adjusting Volume: Insights into Hand-building and Throwing with Randy Johnston / June 15-16, 2013 

In this workshop Randy will be demonstrating a variety of hand-building techniques, including wood and paper patterns, altering, and assemblage. He will discuss the development and integration of form and surface in his work, addressing both functional and sculptural intentions. He will also be discussing the effects of wood firing on his pots and his intentions for the surface.

Enrollments for our workshops are limited and early registration is recommended.We require full tuition, and a $25 non-refundable registration fee for enrollment. Registration is non-transferable. There will be a $50 fee to switch from one workshop to another, space permitting, within 30 days of the original workshop.

All workshops run from 10-5 each day with a break for lunch. There will be a slide show the prior evening of each workshop at 6pm. The slide shows are free and open to the public. Stop by Taos Clay to see pottery for sale by each of the artists through out the summer.

Participants are encouraged to work in the studio after or before a workshop begins, as well as in the evenings during the workshop.
