Rag Rug Weaving with Sandy Voss / June 21 – 23, 2013

Rag rug weaving is a time-honored craft that has been practiced throughout the world for ages. Take your own part in this noble tradition with professional rag weaver Sandy Voss in this 3-day rag-weaving workshop. This is your chance to create the rugs you are dreaming of with the help of a teacher who has a practiced eye for what makes a rag rug attractive as well as durable. You can expect to come home with 2 to 5 finished pieces, using weft materials of your choosing. Bring precut rags (or buy them here at EVFAC) and/or fabric you’d like to use to cut up in class. While beginning-level weavers are welcome, students do need to have looms warped ahead of time.

Ghost Ranch Family Week / July, 1 2013

Family Week provides rich opportunities for families of all shapes and sizes to enjoy time together in study, creative arts, play and adventure.

Activities include campfires, games, hikes, yoga, waterfront activities, an arts center for creativity, a musical concert, outdoor movie nights and Coffee House, the Ghost Ranch version of a talent show. To celebrate independence day there will be a parade and July 4th celebration with fireworks (weather permitting) which includes a cookout with our neighbors from the surrounding communities. When you come for the whole week, family members can enjoy a variety of one-day workshops mixed with a variety of fun activities. Following the rich inter-generational worship at The Agape Center, families will join in one of eight available workshops. As a family, choose five of the following workshops. Upon arrival you will be given a schedule of the order of activities you have been assigned for the week.

Free Artist Slide Lecture: Hayne Bayless / July 3, 2013

Hayne Bayless is a studio potter living in Ivoryton, CT. In college he managed to avoid all academic art. Twenty years ago he quit a perfectly good job as a newspaper editor to make pots. He has exhibited at the Smithsonian Craft Show and the Minnesota Potters Tour for many years. He exhibits and teaches extensively in major US galleries and workshop venues, and has been awarded three residencies at Watershed Center for the Ceramic Arts in Maine. His work has been published in Studio Potter Magazine, among other books and publications.

Desert Waters: A Painting With Paper Workshop / July 11 – 13, 2013

There is a magical quality to water in the desert and we have several of these oases a short journey from Santa Fe.  The Chama and Pecos rivers, Abiquiu Lake, the Rio Grande, Bosque del Apache and Elephant Butte provide excellent opportunities for painters to capture the magic of water in the desert.  In this 3-day intensive workshop we’ll explore the expressive possibilities of abstract desert landscapes while learning the layering and “mixing” capabilities of banana, mango and mulberry tree fiber paper.  We’ll practice a variety of under-painting techniques and mapping strategies and learn the benefits of a limited palette. Other topics include triangulated compositions, lessons from the masters, gestural use of media and more. Artists create 3 or more paintings a day and learn valuable critiquing skills for furthering their own work.  We will be making day trips from Santa Fe as well as spending time in my art studio. Artists bring their own lunch, canvas and painting media. 9 am – 5 pm plus some evening critique sessions.
