Learn to bead a traditional medicine bag from the Emmy award winning costume designer of Dances with Wolves and other films: Historian and beadworker, Cathy A. Smith. Your museum quality bag will be made of Braintanned buckskin and antique Venetian beads done in traditional Lakota designs. Beadwork classes are held at Smith’s historic Nambe Trading Post on the road to Chimayo.
Cathy Smith is best known for her authentic costumes in films such as Dances with Wolves, Comanche Moon, Geronimo and Son of the Morning Star – for which she won the Emmy for Excellence in Costume Design. Cathy has spent her lifetime participating in the ceremonies and cultural life-ways of relatives on the Cheyenne River Reservation and refining her skills in the sacred art of porcupine quillwork. She is a dedicated historian and artist of the West and shares these experiences in her classes held at the historic Nambe Trading Post just 20 minutes north of Santa Fe on the road to Chimayo. Smith is now curator of the trading post which is filled with Indian artifacts, movie costumes, and curiosities of the Santa Fe Trail.
