Species or “botanical” tulips are the starting point in the long story of the garden tulip. Most are from mountainous areas with low summer rainfall, and are particularly well-suited to Santa Fe gardens that are not excessively irrigated during the bulbs’ summer dormant season. They are usually smaller than the garden hybrids, but they amaze and surprise with color intensity and flower size.

Plant the bulbs in the right place and they will re-bloom year after year with colorful flowers, and may even increase to form sizeable colonies. Like hybrid tulips, they are best planted in the fall in a sunny, well-drained spot.

The bulbs are on sale NOW at the kiosk at the Santa Fe Botanical Garden, Museum Hill.  Varieties available: Chrysantha, Little Princess, Tarda, Turkestanica, and Wilsoniana.Read more >
