The Eight of Pentacles, from Tarot de St. Croix:
A Work-in-Progress with Lisa de St. Croix

In a monumental undertaking, Santa Fe artist Lisa de St. Croix has spent the last four years creating her own tarot deck. It has been an intensely personal and explorative journey, one that she hopes will define her career as an artist. At the time of this posting, Ms. de St. Croix is just five cards away from completing the deck. It will be published next spring with Arnell Ando.

Here, Ms. de St. Croix reveals some of the process behind creating one of her latest cards, the Eight of Pentacles (follow the complete progress of her deck at lisadestcroix.blogspot.com).

Eight of Pentacles is about taking action, doing the work that turns vision into reality. Thinking of the phrase “busy as a beaver,” I took a walk in search of them along the Santa Fe River. Their habitat is a strange construction site: trees gnawed down to giant pencils, piles of sticks and logs, tracks in the mud. Through the dense cattails I heard the slap of one of their large flat tails against the water. The river is barely running this year but thanks to their construction a dam wall of downed aspen logs created a lush and fertile habitat. Beavers are home builders creating and maintaining elaborate lodges. The message of this card is to focus your attention on the physical work needed to achieve your dreams.
